Albay is located in southeastern Luzon, with a total land area of 2,575.77 square kilometers of mountainous areas and fertile plains and valleys. Bordered on the north and south by land, and on the east and west by sea, the province’s topography is ideal for both agriculture and travel. In fact, in 2016, the province was added to UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves due to its beautifully pristine ecosystems. Albay is composed of 15 towns across three component cities: Legazpi, the provincial capital, Ligao, and Tabaco. The province is accessible by land, sea, or air, with the Maharlika Highway as the primary road connection to other provinces. It has four active ports—Tabaco (international), Legazpi (national), Pio Duran (provincial), and Pantao (regional)—as well as one airport in Legazpi that caters to local flights. An international airport, located in Daraga, is under construction. This level of accessibility boosts Albay’s appeal in terms of tourism, which is in fact among the significant contributors of the province’s development. An estimated 300,000 tourists flock to Albay annually, especially in relation to Mayon Volcano. However, the biggest driver of Albay’s economic growth is the industry sector. This includes construction and mining, which is also seen in neighboring provinces. The services sector is also booming in Albay, with more opportunities for accounting and finance, communications, office-based and clerical work, and hospitality. Finally, agriculture and fisheries remain to be thriving industries in Albay. The key products are abaca, coconut, corn, rice, sugar, and tuna.
